'Spray Paint Can' - Rattling Noise - 2013 Manual 100k

ROK Brainstrust,

2013 Manual 100,000k

Have had a mechanical rattle which sounds like a 'spray paint can' being shook when the ute is moving. Nothing stationary. Is not tied engine revs and is the same in any gear and with clutch in or out. A/C on and off.

So after a big end bearing seized on number 3 (unrelated to the noise), have had a full engine rebuild and also put a new DMF/Clutch and CSC in on spec. Was thinking the noise was the DMF. All exhaust heat shieldsand underbody attachments have been checked secure.

Well was disappointed when first driving away after the engine rebuild with new DMF, that the noise is still there. Its more prevalent out the drivers side window than the passengers. Its not there at idle/revving when stopped. Starts about 40km/h and continues with the same intensity up to highway speeds. Does not appear to get faster/louder and goes away when decelerating though about 40km/h.

Any help in solving this mystery would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Nui

One of 2 possible things , you have a loose socket / spanner laying around in a body cavity or a rock stuck in the disc brake

Rock stuck in the disc brake....never would have thought of that!...

Nui.... you haven’t got any spray cans in the tray??? 🤣

Yep on the old forum there was quite a bit of info regarding the rock in the caliper

  • Thanks for the suggestions guys.

RH Caliper off and no stones...

Now thinking it might be the RH inner CV joint. Some evidence of noise when spinning the wheel on the jack. Will take it to a mechanic for a second opinion..

  • So finally Mechanic has found the issue. Right front bearing has gone and needs replacement.

Not the normal 'bearing on its way out' noise....
