Maybe a custom 1/8" or 2.5-3 mm steel one... I think that a skid plate made of AISI 1020 or ASTM A36 (similar in mechanical behavior) and painted or even powdercoated would result in a lower price than an Aluminium Alloy one, I think those are made with 5052 or 5154 alloys, which are not as tough or as resistant as a 6061 T6.

Definitely the cheapest way would be a custom made one, or at least here in Colombia it's that way. But remember, steel is about 2.9 times more dense than Aluminium, so, it doesn't compensate for the thinner plate, it should remain heavier. Aluminium skids are usually 6.35 mm, so, twice the thickness, but one third the density, the resulting skid should be around 25-30% lighter.

On the other hand, aluminium is very common now, and for racing it is ideal, because of weight savings in fully protected cars, but I like more the ultimate strength of the steel. What I mean is:

They will both take about the same abuse before bending or plastic modification.
But when they go beyond the elastic limit, the aluminium will reach the material limit faster, meaning that it will tear or split easier, the steel could be severely bent and even repaired (replacing the paint obviously).

I missed out on buying it, but would go with the subaxtreme underbody guards myself

That is pretty impressive effort! Just one thing - pressed plate seems to be bolted to underneath of chassis. You did not drill chassis rail, did you?

Any chance the design / measurements for this setup were recorded?
Are they series 500 structural steel screws used to fix the sheet to the under side of the chassis?
